1 self-introduction
Hello, I'm PENGUINS PROJECT. This is my first time visiting the US.
Nice to meet you and I hope you'll enjoy the session.
2 music and DTM career
I started to play piano at age 4, and joined some rock bands with my friends
when I was a junior high school student.
Then, when I bought a synthesizer to play in the band,
I also became very interested in making songs by computer programming.
Then I entered university, and I started to work in the music industry.
It was a difficult time, and I was forced to face some tough situations.
Eventually, at one point I retired from making music.
However, Hatsune Miku let me come back to music!
I re-started making music from 3 years ago,
as PENGUINS PROJECT, as you know.
3 what do I think of VOCALOID?
At first, for me , Hatsune Miku is simply a useful and innovative software.
Before Miku appeared in front of us, we have to sing by ourselves
or ask for someone to sing for us.
You may not understand what is difficult about that,
but if you try to make songs, you'll soon realize
how difficult it is for some kinds of composers
to sing his/her songs by themselves or ask for someone to sing.
I can say that it was more difficult than even making songs!
However, Miku changed this situation.
At the same time, Hatsune Miku is without doubt a cute pop character.
To be frank with you, my songs became popular not only because of
musical interest but also because they were sung by Miku, I think.
Miku has a miracle charm. Miku is actually just software,
but many people don't use "it" but "her" when talking about Miku.
Without "her" voice, PENGUINS PROJECT couldn't exist. I have to say thank you to Miku!
Today, I'll show you a brand-new music video of PENGUINS PROJECT.
This song is called "GALAPAGOS" . As you know,
Galapagos is the name of the islands in the south-east of the Pacific Ocean.
So at first sight, it seems that it is just a song singing about a peaceful tropical island.
By the way, do you know how the word "Galapagos " is used in Japan?
It means "highly developed but very localized and closed, so very unique ,
but lacking global sight".
I was inspired to write this song by the 3.11 Tohoku- Japan earthquake.
The earthquake prevailed over so many problems about our country Japan.
This is a song with a very serious message.
Anyway, I'm happy to tell you that this is its world-premiere showing. I hope you'll enjoy it. "GALAPAGOS", by PENGUINS PROJECT.

In this song, many kinds of Galapagos animals appear,
and I tried to write the lyrics to show that they look like Japanese people.
These animals are symbols for Japanese people, Vocaloid fans, and each of us in this hall.
You will find a curious Japanese word in this song. "Chiyo-ni Yachiyo-ni".
This passage is from the song called "Kimiga-yo" , The National Anthem of Japan.
This passage means " Glorious reign lasts forever and ever". A very symbolic phrase.
I want to say thank you to three creators working with me.
First, RITSUKA. She is very famous as a singer on NicoNico-Douga,but in this time,
she gave help with drawing turtles, elephants, and so on!
I was surprised that she had not only singing talent but also drawing talent!
Second, YAMA_KO. He is also very famous as a movie creator,
for example, "Migikata-no Chou", and "Rollin' Girl".
He organized ritsuka's cartoons in picture scroll style.
At last, WHOO. He played acoustic guitar.
I met him for the first time this March, in Kyoto, and found a kindred spirit in him.
5 Message
Today is a unforgettable day for me. I could tell you my emotions about Vocaloid and music.
I had a very very happy time.
When I'm devoting myself to writing a song,
I always think about US, and about Europe, Asia, and Africa.
I imagine many people living in many countries,
spending their own daily lives, working, studying,
fallin' love with somebody, laughing and crying.
I imagine these ordinary scenes all over the world when I'm making songs,
because I want to deliver my songs
beyond just VOCALOID fans, beyond just Japan, and beyond Galapagos.

1 自己紹介
こんにちは、私がペンギンズプロジェクトです。
私は今回、初めてアメリカを訪問しています。
このセッションを皆さんが楽しんでくだされば幸いです、
よろしくお願いいたします。
2 音楽歴について
私は四歳の時にピアノを始めました。
そして中学生のとき、友達と一緒にいくつかのロックバンドに参加しました。
そして、バンドで演奏するために買ったシンセサイザーで、
私はコンピュータプログラミングで音楽を作ることにも、
とても興味を持ったのです。
そして私は大学に入学して、音楽業界で働き始めました。それは困難な時期で、
私はいくつかのキツい状況に直面せざるを得ませんでした。
ついにその時点で、私は音楽を作る事を辞めてしまったのです。
しかしながら、初音ミクが私を音楽に引き戻してくれました！
私は三年前に音楽制作を再開しました、
ご存知のとおり、ペンギンズプロジェクトとして。
3 ボーカロイドについての考え
まず始めに、私にとって、
ボーカロイドは単純に便利で、画期的なソフトウェアです。
ミクが私たちの前に現れるまでは、私たちは自分で歌うか、
誰かに歌ってもらうよう頼まなければなりませんでした。
それのどこが難しいのか、と思われるかもしれません。
しかしもしあなたが曲を作ろうとしたら、あなたはじきに、
自分自身で歌う、あるいは誰かに歌ってもらうよう頼むということが、
どれだけ難しいかに気付くでしょう。
曲を作るよりそっちのほうがより難しいと言えるくらいです（笑）。
だけど、ミクがその状況を変えました。
そして同じく、初音ミクは間違いなく、
キュートでポップなキャラクターでもあります。
正直に言いますと、私の曲が沢山の方に支持されたのも、
音楽的な要素だけではなく、
それらがミクによって歌われたこともあると思っています。
ミクは奇跡的な魅力を持っています。
ミクは実のところ、単なるソフトウェアです。
しかし多くの人がミクについて語るとき、「それ」ではなく「彼女」と呼ぶのです。
「彼女」の声なしに、ペンギンズプロジェクトはありません。
私は彼女にありがとうと言わなければいけないでしょう！
4 新曲について
今日は皆さんに新しいミュージックビデオをお見せします。
「ガラパゴス」という曲です。ご存知の通り、ガラパゴスとはは
太平洋の南東に位置する島の名前です。ですから一見すると、
この曲はただの平和な熱帯の島について歌っているように見えます。
ところで、皆さんは日本で「ガラパゴス」という言葉が
どのように使われているか知っていますか？
「高度に発達して、だがとても局地的で閉鎖的、
だからとても個性的だが、世界的な視野を欠いている」
という意味です。
私はこの曲を書くにあたって、
３月１１日の東日本大震災にインスパイアされました。
この震災は私達の国、日本の多くの問題を露呈させたのです。
この曲はとてもシリアスなメッセージを持った曲です。
ともかく、私はこの曲をワールドプレミアでお見せ出来る事をとても嬉しく思います。
楽しんでくだされば幸いです。「ガラパゴス」、ペンギンズプロジェクト。

この曲の中で、たくさんのガラパゴスの動物が登場します。
私はそれらが日本人の姿に映るように歌詞を書きました。
動物たちは日本人の象徴であり、ボーカロイドファンの象徴であり、
そしてこの会場の皆さんひとりひとりの象徴です。
この曲の中に「千代に八千代に」という奇妙な日本語のフレーズがありますよね。
このフレーズは「君が代」と呼ばれる日本の国歌のものです。
このフレーズは「偉大なる治世が永久に続きますように」という
とても象徴的なフレーズです。
私は共に頑張ってくれた三人のクリエイターに感謝したい。
まず、リツカ。彼女はニコニコ動画で歌い手としてとても有名ですが、
今回はカメやゾウの絵を描いてくれました。
私は彼女が歌の才能だけでなく絵の才能まであることに驚きました！（笑）
次に、yama_ko。彼もまた「右肩の蝶」や「ローリンガール」などの
映像クリエイターとしてとても有名ですね。
彼がリツカの絵を絵巻物の形式にまとめてくれました。
最後に、whoo。彼がアコースティックギターを演奏しました。
私は今年の三月、京都で初めて彼に会い、そしてとても意気投合しました。
5 北米のファンに伝えたい事
今日は私にとって忘れられない日になりました。私はみなさんに、ボーカロイド、
そして音楽についての情熱をお話することができました。
私はとても、とても幸せな一時を過ごすことができました。
曲を書くことに没頭しているとき、
私はいつもアメリカの事を、ヨーロッパの事を、
アジアの事を、アフリカの事を思っています。
多くの人々が多くの国で暮らし、一人ひとりの日々を過ごし、働き、学び、
誰かと恋に落ち、笑ったり泣いたりするところを想像します。
音楽を作る時、私はそんな何気ない日常の風景を思い描きます。
私は自分の音楽を届けたいのです、ボーカロイドファンを越えて、
日本を越えて、そしてガラパゴスを越えて。
